James South to Faraday   5 August 1865

Observatory Kensington | Augt. 5th. 1865.

My dear Faraday

I received your letter on Thursday last dated, blank, Augt. 3d. 1865, with pleasure & with pain. With the former, because it shewed me that I still enjoyed the kind feeling of a good old friend, the latter, because it informed me, that my old friend Faraday was very much as I am, namely, (I fear) becoming helpless as myself - Now touching the Scholarship, I fear all thoughts of meddling with it must be extinguished, as London is a desert, no body who can be away from it, is to be seen, none but Invalids without locomotive power. My feeble state prevents me dictating any more than saying “God Bless you”, which I do with all my heart, and all my Soul.

J. South

P.S. If able, I will write again. | Kindest regards to Mrs. Faraday & Miss Barnard
