Hampton Court, August 26, 1867.
My dear Dr. Bence Jones, - Our cares are over: our beloved one is gone. He passed away from this life quietly and peacefully yesterday afternoon. Almost immediately after you saw him, a little more than a fortnight ago, he became weaker, and has said very little to us or taken much notice of anything from that time; but still we did not expect the change until an hour to two before it happened.
He died in his chair, in his study; and we feel we could desire nothing better for him than what has occurred.
My aunt and I feel that you were the last friend that he showed any lively interest in, and we are very glad you saw him before you went away.
...
I am, dear Dr. Jones, yours very sincerely, | Jane Barnard
