Jane Barnard to Henry Bence Jones   3 September 1867

The funeral took place on Friday (the 30th), leaving here at 9.30, and taking up some of the mourners at the Royal Institution1, and from thence to Highgate. By my dear uncle’s verbal and written wishes, it was strictly private and plain2. We could not but follow out his wishes. I must not lead you to think we did not enter fully into his views, but some would have liked it otherwise.

My occupation has gone.

Ever most sincerely and gratefully yours, | Jane Barnard

This was noted in Tyndall, Diary, 30 August 1867, RI MS JT/2/10, p.416. Neither Tyndall nor any other member of the scientific community were invited to the funeral.
As described in Highgate Cemetery MS Register of Burials, number 2839. See James (2010), 17, 128.
