Faraday to Edward Hawkins   1830s

R Institution | Septr. 18th

My dear Sir

I send you a bottle of solution in which to immerse some of the Chessmen for an experiment. I ought rather to have sent it to the gentleman I found with you but have not the pleasure of his acquaintance or knowledge of his name1[.]

Ever Dear Sir | Truly Yours | M. Faraday

Edwd. Hawkins Esqr | &c &c &c

This referred to the chemical treatment of the hoard of the Lewis chess pieces that had been acquired by the British Museum between November 1831 and January 1832. See Stratford (1997), 5-11.
