Dear Sir,

I am sorry I have been unable to give you an immediate reply - having been away on a melancholy occasion. The supposed reptile I presume to be a worm the Gordius aquaticus, often met with in streams, & which has given rise to the popular error that a horsehair in such situations turns to a worm.
