To John Phillips 20 August 1834

Cholsey Wallingford

20 Aug 1834

My dear Sir,

I have been here during the summer utterly out of the reach of libraries & unable to complete the request of the Nat. Hist. section that I would prepare a report on Bot. Geography. Indeed I have found that nearly all that has of late been written on the subject is in the German language which I do not read. I have however taken daily lessons from my wife this summer & hope to be able before another session to be sufficiently master of it to enable me to give some account of the contents of the Authors I allude to. This year however I can do nothing. I propose to leave Oxford on Sept. 1 in company with Dr Buckland & to make a week's journey along the west of England in our way to Edinb. when we expect to arrive on the 8th or 9th. I have the following notices to send you -

(1). The following names were taken off before I left Cambridge

  • Revd H. Margetts of Huntingdon
  • Sir Ch. Watson
  • Revd Acton
  • J. Baily esq.
  • Mr Pearson (Revd I believe)

(2). Revd G. Skinner requests that he may have a lodging ready for him in Edinburgh as he proposed to attend (this for the Council I presume)

Believe me

Very sincerely Yrs

J. S. Henslow
