Hitcham Hadleigh Suffolk
30 Dr 1851
My dear Bree,
I have just received 2 letters together & enclosed the envelope to the first that you may see how necessary it is to put Suffolk to so obscure a locality as Hitcham. The Bury P.O. serves me the same trick continually.
Thanks for your explanation of your mistake. We are all liable to such. I always have been considering Diastase as a modified condition of gluten - essential to the action it produces on starch - somewhat mysteriously certainly, but which appears to be actually proved. I never see the Ipswich papers except by chance or after one of our Museum lectures. The mistake they have made in your case is precisely the sort of mistake they perpetually make in dealing with scientific subjects. In a little account I sent them of what Sir Ch. Lyell had said at the Soiree they misheard me & inverted lias or trias. He luckily looked at their report of his own lecture in the proof & thus restored the Dodo to the Mauritius instead of leaving it in New Zealand where they had driven it - &c &c. We shall be very glad of Doubleday's assistance in the typical series, & if he would name such insects as are typical of the chief groups of the different orders it would be a great help. Common species if possible.
Kind regards & Compts of Season to the Mrss Bree
Believe me
very truly Yrs
