To George Knights 31 October 1854

Hitcham, Hadleigh, Suffolk

31 Oct 1854

My dear Sir,

I enclose an old letter of mine to Knox, which he has sent me, & by which you will see that Bentley's changes were less than those proposed by your Brother. His order for 400 I also enclose, but as he is not aware yet what price your Brother proposes to charge perhaps it had better not be executed till he knows this. Quere whether leaving a blank (instead of altering the type) to be filled up for the respective churches might not lower the price somewhat, & would enable your Brother to strike of the whole batch at once after he has ascertained pretty nearly how many he is likely to want. As he has now all the facts before him, he can judge for himself & send out his proposals. I hope you received the block safely. I have been anxious to know on what day my services are required at Ipswich for Mrs Henslow wants to go over with me, & Mrs Vachell (at whose house she would sleep) cannot receive her after Monday. I am always obliged to look out ahead to make my engagements abroad link with those at home, & I would thank you to let me know as soon as you can what day is fixed for Sidney's lecture, which (I believe) is to be the opening one of the Season. Not knowing this I have not fixed to come over any day this week as I had intended, as I can't well spare two days just now if the lecture of Sidney is to take place before my own. If I am not officially wanted before my own I shall come over on Friday for a day's work at the Museum, or perhaps on Monday either of which days will suit Mrs Vachell to receive Mrs Henslow

Yrs very truly

J. S. Henslow

Let me have my old letter to return to Knox
