To George Knights 3 December 1855

Hitcham, Bildeston, Suffolk

3 Decr 1855

My dear Knights,

Tho' I promise no more than 3 Lectures (2 for me & 1 for my Lord) this session - I think (if we are really pressed) I might contrive an hour to meet the suggestion thrown out in the P.S. I have added to the present notice. I can say nothing respecting the Journal's requiring payment for notices of Lectures - but perhaps yr Brother won't object to the P.S. & consider it as a notice. Possibly he thinks the Notices valueless - & they must remain so till the final explanation I have always contemplated shall make them serviceable. My plan will be to have Tables printed by which it will be easy (without burdening the memory) for anyone who can write & read to decipher the Hieroglyphics in which the Crystalline System & Composition are given & he must be a noodle indeed who will not be able after an hour's explanation to make proper use of them. I will also eliminate & diagramatize the few Suffolk Species - & I have no doubt I could make up an instructive lecture - but won't promise a mere paper-seed - magic lantern work - & verbiage. I want to induce some (however few) to do something for themselves, & if they will only work at our Suffolk minerals they will find a fund of amusement in filling up a home cabinet of some one foot cube & as much more as they have space for the types of suffolk fossils.

Ever yrs truly

J. S. Henslow

There will be no need of a revise
