6 Decr 1855
My dear Knights,
Who then is to take my place on Jany 22? Which is the day on which I exchange a lecture with Ld A. H.? March 18 may possibly turn out an awkward day for my presiding at Ld A. H.'s lecture as I (I mentioned this before) am not sure of my movements in March - having to examine at the Nat. Sciences Tripos in Cambridge during that month. Possibly there was no other day but I had thought Ld H. agreed to the 22 Jan. In this, as I have not his letter, I may be quite mistaken.
I think understood you to say you really wished to give some prize at our Hort. Show. That was you bestowed on the Soc. in 1854. I carried to a/c this year. As I am making up my a/cs for this Soc., if you wish I will arrange for your contribution (for I believe you would not like to be omitted) only I think you were more generous than necessary in the former case in giving so much as 10 /-
If you were to reduce it to 5/- in prizes for some appropriate object (say the School Children's Botany or nosegays, or perhaps better still, an object in wood to be initiated by our young labourers). I have offered them 3 prizes for wood carving - & perhaps a model or two that wd not cost more than 5/- coming from another quarter might act as an inducement. I have said all this in the full conviction that I meet your wishes - but if you do not propose to subscribe again pray tell me, & excuse me for raising it. I know we have all plenty to do with our stray shillings in this Wartime, & I don't wish to trespass.
Ever yrs truly
J. S. Henslow
