To George Knights 19 March 1857

Hitcham, Bildeston, Suffolk

19 March 1857

My dear Knights

I send my suggestions for the stops for the 3 lines of libel.

Nos 1. 2. 3. are intended for gagues by which they may be prepared. These should be kept.

A. B. C. D. show the four stages in preparing the stops for No.1. Ex gr.

  • (A) As many as required can first be cut to this size.
  • (B) The curve lines rule by the gague No.1.
  • (C) The parts cut away
  • (D) Either dipped in ink (twice over) or smeared on one side (as here) with a hair pencil. I have done this carelessly. Would printers ink answer better?

If a wider stop were required, it can easily be obtained by cutting the card wider as in Examples 9 & 7, & using the same gague.

Of course Nos. 2 & 3 can be similarly employed.

If each step in the process is first completed for all that are needed, the work will proceed rapidly.

You will judge of the best thickness of the board required for these stops - mine being too thin rather.

Yrs truly
