My Dear Sir
Understanding from good authority that Hooker means to resign his Chair in Glasgow, & that two candidates have already taken the field, I see no impropriety in my coming forward also as a candidate, although the vacancy has not yet been officially announced. I am therefore anxious to collect Testimonials, with that view I take the liberty for addressing you, in the hope that from the intercourse you have had with me you may perhaps be able to give an opinion of my botanical acquirements.
I have lectured here last summer to a class of 50 pupils. A larger class than was attended as extra-academical lectures in this city.
I was the first to set the Botanical Society of Edinh on foot, which now reckons upwards of 250 members on its list.
I trust you will excuse the liberty I have taken & believe me
Yours most respectfully
J. H. Balfour
Some of your pupils attended my lectures last summer. Among these I may notice Mr Blackall who can speak as to my qualifications.
