To John Tyndall, Snr   Jan. 24th, 1841.

Youghal, | Jan. 24th, 1841.

My dear Father

You no doubt will be surprised at this hasty repetition of writing to you. I spoke in my letter of last night1 about exerting yourself respecting a situation for me in the bank of Ireland. I have considered that subject calmly since, and have come to the conclusion that it would be better to suspend all efforts of that nature for the present. Both the Capt. and Dean2 would very naturally ask why I was so very anxious to leave my present employment. I’m afraid I could not give a sufficient reason for it. When I wrote to you last night my spirits were greatly depressed on account of Mulligan’s leaving us, this shed a gloom over the situation and every thing connected with it. I had great hopes of being well advanced with Mulligan and I considered these as destroyed when I heard of him being taken away from us, however when I come to consider things calmly I have no reason to despond – I’m not afraid of being outstripped by any one in the office as a workman, and I stand on an equal footing with them at present as respects our new Superintendent.3

I hope you have not spoken to either the Captain or the Dean it would be unwise to obtrude on their kindness at present – Time may come when it will be more needed, and until then I think it best to let every thing remain as it is. I have no reason to be discontented with my present situation, and I hope it’s better it will be getting. Don’t blame me for inconsistency when you read this, when I came to think over things quietly I was vexed with myself for suffering my impatience to manifest itself so much. Should you be harsh on me in thus acting I have no one in Leighlin to plead my cause except my mother; to her I will appeal as counsel for my defence and I trust that her interference will soften circumstances

I remain your affectionate son | John Tyndall

Give my love to Emma
