My dear Tyndall

When I received your long expected letter I had the paper before me going to pen another for I thought that you had not received the last. My dear Tyndall although I asked you to take the trouble of writing the names for me I did not mean that you should keep me in such anxious expectation of your letter. I wish I was near enough to receive some of your <word illeg> and not be in this horrible place. I suppose you heard of the wreck of the great Killarney Steamer,1 I am lodging within 2 miles of the place.2 I am sorry your opinion of Roberts is so deservedly bad. I assure you I never had a very good one of him from the time I had any intimate acquaintance with him, in Youghal, in Castlemartyr,3 he squandered away his money playing cards and drinking and never had any for the mess, but I need not tell you of his goodness for you know it better than I do. I did not let him get into my debt much, he is in debt to Ferris4 9 shillings. I was sorry to hear poor Jim5 was so near being turned out for his stiffness but he is well recompenced for it by having a Tyrett6 to himself. Who do you suspect sent that new valentine, I envees you, why did not you tell them to send me one? But you did not answer my question about the office going to Cork. I wish it was, for I could see you often. I was asked from home would I like to be introduced to society in Cork. So that if you are there we may have some fun. I was in Cork several times since I came here. I would not have gone only that I had a little business, for it was no inducement for me. Why when you are such an hermit stuck up in that dark domicile. why dont you be something like a chieftain and go and pay the fair ones a visit –– such as Miss <word illeg>? If I was near you you would not be so. if you were as bad as I am separated from the only person that I cared anything about (G Holmes) – he was sent to Middleton7 and I left Bird8 alone. Remember me to all the Dashent9 fellows

Yours ever | Murray

If you were here the other day when I reclaimed my character by mounting part of Camolin10 barracks where none of the other fellows would follow.
