To John Tyndall, Snr   Tuesday Evening, (August 10th, 1841)

Kinsale, | Tuesday1 Evening

My dear Father

This morning I received your letter2 it was indeed long looked for. My correspondence is much more limited than formerly. Some of my friends have flagged and others have departed to another hemisphere.

I never was more surprised in my life than to find that John Mooney was taking an active part in preventing Roman Catholics from dealing with you,3 there were few men in Leighlin that I liked better than John and none on whom I would sooner place dependence. How mistaken I was. It’s hard to form a correct estimate of human character. Were this intelligence from any other source I would deem it incredible. I wish I was speaking to John I think I would bring him to a sense of his want of consistency. These certainly are perilous times, when a man’s own familiar friend is the first to raise his heel against him.

I’m sure this system of exclusive dealing must have injured you. You may be in want of a little money perhaps. I have two or three pounds by me which I intended for my expenses going home and returning. If you are agreeable I’ll send you this I willingly give up the pleasure I would experience on seeing you and my mother and Emma could the money that I have at present be useful to you. If you want it it’s foolish to spend it on coach fare. Speak to my mother and whatever determination she and you come to that I will abide by. Send me word immediately what you would wish me to do

Phil4 desires to be remembered to you | Your affectionate son | John

I’ll be expecting an answer every day, write one – be it ever so short.
