To John Tyndall, Snr   Friday night, (Apr. 8th, 1842)

Cork | Friday night

My dear Father

I suppose you have made a vow against writing to me, this is now my third letter without having received one in return.1 I would not write this were it not to communicate something respecting my expected furlough.2 I wrote and applied for leave the other day, it was presented to Major Waters. I asked leave for a month, but he has even exceeded my request, he has given me from May 1st to June 10th, nearly six weeks. I suppose you’ll all be tired of me before that time is expired. You may however expect to see me toddling into Leighlin about May day, after my two years tramp. It will be two years the 1st of May next since I first entered the town of Youghal3 as a Citizen of the world. Give the accompanying parcel to Mr Murray. I saw about one hundred and fifty of our fellows set off today in the steamer for England among the number were Cuddy and Joe4 and Tom Payne. Mrs Payne remains in Cork.

Your affectionate son | John Tyndall.
