O.S.: Ordnance Survey.

the Detail Survey: the branch of the Survey tasked with surveying and mapping topographical details, rather than boundaries.

William Branter: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 October 1837. Branter remained in Ireland until the winter of 1841, when he left for the English Survey.

Patrick Donnelly: not identified.

James Butler: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 October 1840. Butler left for the English Survey at some point during the autumn of 1841.

Matthew Donohoe: possibly Matthew Donoghue; Donoghue joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 May 1839. Donoghue was discharged from the Irish Survey on 27 May 1841; if he is the person dismissed in this letter, he probably accepted a demotion to labourer in order to join the English Survey.

Carroll: Peter Carroll; joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 May 1837. He appears to have left the Irish Survey for the English Survey during March 1842.

George Doyle: not identified.

John Conner: possibly John Connor. However, Connor was discharged from the Irish Ordnance Survey on 27 May 1841, making it somewhat unlikely that he would have been hired on the English Survey; this may be a different individual.

Matthew Doyle: not identified.

Jeremiah Griffin: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 June 1838. He later joined the English Survey.

John Howard: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey in June 1838, but had left by January 1839. It is likely that he left for the English Tithe Survey, which offered better pay, before rejoining the Ordnance Survey in England.

Michael McCarthy: not identified; see letter 0288.

Michael Murphy: not identified.

John Kelly (1st): not identified.

Daniel Mylot: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 October 1840. Mylot left the Irish Survey during the autumn of 1841 and later joined the English Survey.

James O’Neill | Daniel O’Sullivan: not identified.

Dennis Malone: not identified.

Patrick McCord: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 September 1840. McCord left the Irish Survey during the autumn of 1841 and later joined the English Survey.

James Smyth | Charles G. Stuart | John Thornton | Robert Westhead: not identified.

Henry McIntyre: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 May 1834. He remained on the Irish Survey relatively late, departing sometime after August 1842 for the English Survey.

John Tole: joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 December 1839. It is likely that he left for the English Tithe Survey, which offered better pay, and later made his way back to the Ordnance Survey in England.

Oliver O’Railly: probably Oliver O’Reilly; he joined the Irish Ordnance Survey on 1 November 1840. O’Reilly left the Irish Survey during the autumn of 1841 and later joined the English Survey.

Patrick Walsh: appears to have joined the Irish Ordnance Survey in late 1839 or early 1840. He left the Irish Survey during the autumn of 1841 and later joined the English Survey.
