From George Latimer   July 27th 1844

Newtown Gore1 | July 27th 1844.

My dear Tyndall,

If it be time to answer your last letter2 I now snatch from the world these few moments which I hope shall be uninterrupted. When I did not receive your reply the first or second day after the important decision3 took place, I entertained but little hope of your victory, though in days gone by I was always or more generally recognised as the sanguine Latimer, now I am led to trace you in your epistle and conclude that you were a little sanguine on that occasion but I dare not blame you my dear fellow, for the importance of the case no doubt was well calculated to excite that spirit, if there was but one spark existing in the being of cool and calculating Tyndall. Yes, you certainly would have got ‘big in your own country’4 as your estimable friend (Wright)5 terms it, and need I say that there would have been an additional spark of that temperament found rankling in me which hitherto characterized my existence. Well John ‘tis past, irrevocably, sorry though I am and must be that our correspondence will not be so frequent as usual once you take your departure for that (I trust) more friendly clime. Yes and I believe that, to be more worthy of the man than this, for you must but pine away in this tainted land, polluted by every species of dishonour and distrust. But I am of opinion and see no doubt existing that there is to be found reserved for you a nitch in the society of those, better calculated to do honour to merit, and to recognize such with all that respect of which it is worthy. I often endeavour to dream in my waking moments beholding Tyndall occupying that station in society which shall move me to rejoice in ever knowing you, and in being able to say for my own pleasure and gratification, that we oft have lain together and talked over the necessity of the times of which we were not thought worthy, and though vanquished by Aristocratic power yet we were found capable of argument and remonstrance which may be thought of when other men and other days shall be found to do justice to our claim as individuals worthy of note and respect and attention. What about the Toryism of your friends or my friends? Are they not all, Whig and Tory, endeavouring to elevate self on the ruins of others or at the expense of more honest characters, though I never was much prejudiced as to party politics I must be happy in the thought of my lot been cast in Albion6 for any length of time, by which I have been enabled to learn the state of the Times. Well then I should apologize for not writing before this, but my father7 went to the water8 this season, and a good deal of his business devolves on me in his absence, so that I have not much time on hand that I can call leisure. Even since I commenced this I was obliged to desist and attend to other business. What are your thoughts like at present? How far in the perspective does America lie now? and are your thoughts fully bent on that tour? If so, may every prosperity attend you and may every blessing of a Kind Providence be your portion both in time and for Eternity. My dear Tyndall I would fondly hope that you have considered those things so as to cleave to all that is good and all that is your duty as well as your privilege, but I won’t preach more, and will conclude by saying that I do think you have a friend in Wright that will not desert you but who will with all the warmth of a brother prove to be your port in case of your embarkation for that land of liberty and freedom and above everything promise. I won’t say that I shall be always bound up in my native soil. If you go, and think I would do any good there, my time will be short here in all probability. And now with every good wish and desire in sincerity for your welfare

Believe me to be | Your ever affectionate | George Latimer.
