To E. D. Steuart   17th. Oct. 1848

London 17th. Oct. 1848

Madam,

This day week I wrote to you1 sending my address, No 9 Don's Street West Lambeth London expecting on my arrival in town to meet a letter containing the commission which you wished me to execute2 at Frankfort.3 In this expectation I am disappointed – possibly a letter may arrive by this night's post if not I fear it will be too late as I start tomorrow morning from Blackwall4 for Rotterdam. In my letter of this day week I enclosed the half of a £20 bank of England note No 76508, the other half I left in the hands of Mr Hebdon, Old Bank, Preston, Lancashire who was to forward it on being requested by you to do so. I was compelled to make this arrangement because I was unable to procure a letter of credit.5

My address in Germany will be

John Tyndall | care of Professor Bunsen | Marburg | Hesse Cassel.6

This will not be far from Frankfort and should your letter not reach me tonight I will endeavour to have your commission executed personally or through the medium of a friend.

believe me Madam | very sincerely yours | John Tyndall.
