To Thomas Archer Hirst   July 30/49

[Marburg July 30/49]1

My Dear Tom,

I’m sending a packet to England & seize the occasion to request you to bring me as follows.

“ 5 shillings worth of postage stamps.

“ A Booksellers catalogue of Scientific books, chiefly astronomical; I want it for a professor here. Lord2 will assist you to obtain it & it will oblige me much –

Is there not a Second series of essays by Emerson?3 I think so. I have one containing History, Selfreliance, Compensation, Spiritual laws, Love, Friendship, Prudence Heroism, The oversoul, Circles, Intellect, Art, Nature4 subdivided into 8 parts Commodity, Beauty &c, Lectures on the times .3. and orations – If there is a series besides this pray bring it to me; it costs I believ 3/6 – I think there is one ‘with a notice by Thomas Carlyle’ –

Bring a few punches5 with you I has not seen one since I came to Germany;

I am working hard at present preparing for an examination which I intend to pass in a month so when you come I shant be able to play Jackstones or shoot marbles6 with you; we shall have doubtless many pleasant rambles together but I warn you to buckle on your harness for a little work; and further to buckle up your heart against the seductions of our Marburg beauties –

I have got the reputation of being cold and zurückhaltend7 among them –

If you get the money from Southampton or from Mr Edmondson pray enquire of Dr Lees Pontefract road, Leeds, how much I owe him and remit the Sum, I take his Truthseeker8 – –

I believe I owe nothing more in England;

Cram your sensorium9 with news and be prepared to disgorge it when you come –

The state of trade

The state of education

The state of Benevolent institutions generally as in another half year I shall probably be forced to apply for aid –

Does Mr Baines10 still persevere in the attempt to smooth education

Mr Baines ideal of education is by no means exalted –

post the accompanying11 for me –

Wishing you a fair passage and no sea sickness

believe me Dear Tom | Your affc12 friend | J Tyndall

Is Jimmy13 still in Halifax – if so kiss him for me – bring me a kiss from Ada14 - & remember me kindly to your mother15

I wish Ada was living in Marburg – we should have such long walks in the woods together
