From John Phillips   18 July 1850

18 July 1850 | 4 Castle St | Edinburgh.

Sir

Your notice of a paper on the Magneto-Optical properties of Crystals1 has been handed to me by Prof. Kelland.2 As the paper is printed you wish of course to give an Abstract of it perhaps to illustrate by diagrams or experiments. To read a printed Memoir would be somewhat out of course. I advise you to make an abstract of the main points3 & to prepare some illustrations if needed. The subject is curious & there will be persons here worthy of some pains being taken to make the paper satisfactory. It is better to send it before the Meeting,4 but not absolutely demanded5

Yours very truly | John Phillips | Assistt Genl Secretary
