To William Thomson   7th Aug. 1850

Spring Bank Over Darwen Lancashire | 7th Aug. 1850.

Would professor Thomson have the kindness to write down in the margin the title of any book where I might find a statement of the magnetic theory of Poisson?1 If after having done this, the professor would be good enough to return me this leaf2 I should feel very much obliged indeed.

J Tyndall.

in the margin … theory of Poisson: at the BAAS meeting in Edinburgh, Thomson had suggested that Tyndall’s investigation was consistent with Poisson’s theory (see letter 0418).

return me this leaf: Tyndall left the right hand half of his sheet free for the references, but Thomson responded with a long letter (0425), in which he included the Poisson references.
