From Thomas Archer Hirst   Sept 1st, 1850

Halifax, | Sept. 1st, 1850.

My dear Tyndall,

January Searle is just opposite me and come to spend his last Sunday with me. If he knew I was writing he would send his love to ‘that independent old devil Tyndall’. He has been looking at your portrait and expressing his regard for you with all manner of questionable oaths. Your letter1 came to me this morning and I am glad to answer it by return, for it is a cheering prospect. I can say without any exaggeration that in a fortnight’s notice at any time I can lend you £40 as easily as I could lend you a penny. I shall take as much with me from here besides my income whether you accept it or not, so you may reckon me as safe as if it were your own purse. In the event of your accepting it you may leave Spring Bank and must tell me where will be the best place for us to spend a week together before we go. I cannot leave England very conveniently before the first week in October, and should like us to go together if possible – so write to me soon, old fellow.

Yours affectionately, | T.A.Hirst.

The last week of September I must spend in Bristol. The first week or 10 days of it I must spend here, and with my brother2 at Badsworth. The interval must be spent with you. | T.A.H.

Dr Tyndall, | Spring Bank, Over Darwen, Lancs.

RI MS JT/2/14/174

your letter: letter 0429.

my brother: William.
