To Thomas Archer Hirst1

Friday

My Dear Tom.

I enclose you Mr Edmondson’s reply.2 The matter is settled and we shall work together in Germany. I have written to Knoblauch and to Debus announcing the fact. If I mistake not the Semester will commence on or before the 1st of October. It used to commence later but I think its changed and I dont know the precise nature of the change. I shall soon have all necessary information upon this head as I have requested Debus to write to me immediately.

Now your wish is gratified and mine also – I believe it will be to our mutual benefit to be together. It will not be necessary to spend the week or ten days together before hand, but if you like we will visit Queenwood together – What say you to this. – It will be nearly a fortnight before I can hear from Marburg. | J. Tyndall

[Do you] expect to have much baggage? if you want [any information] on this head ask it – 3

Thomas Hirst | [Mr Thorps] | Badsworth Pontefract4

RI MS JT/1/T/535

[6 September 1850]: a Friday. Hirst received this letter on Sunday 8 September (see letter 0441). It took two days to reach him because it was originally addressed to Halifax and was forwarded to Badsworth (see n. 3). Hirst noted on the outside of the envelope that he received it on 8 September.

Mr. Edmondson’s reply: letter missing. Edmondson had agreed to Tyndall’s proposal (letter 0434) to defer negotiations over his return to Queenwood for six months.

[Do you] expect … ask it – : postscript inserted, then crossed out in looping over-writing, in the left margin of this page. Hirst read it and replied, in spite of thorough crossing out, in letter 0441 (written before he received the same enquiry in letter 0440 from Tyndall).

Thomas Hirst … Pontefract : this address was written, in a different hand, after ‘Harrison Road, Halifax’ (in Tyndall’s hand) was thoroughly crossed out. The postmarks are 8 September, at Wakefield and Pontefract.
