To William Francis   27th Jan 1851

Marburg 27th Jan. 1851

Dear Sir

A friend of mine1 is just writing to England and I seize the opportunity to enclose a line or two.2 It is merely to tell you that I am just now engaged at the writing of the memoir on magnetism3 which I mentioned in my last note4 to you and I hope to have it posted within the coming week – It will therefore reach you in time for the March number of the magazine – If you can manage the thing conveniently you would oblige me by inserting it in the March number. It will occupy from 25 to 30 pages. probably 30. I thought a timely notice of this beforehand would not be disagreeable to you as it will enable you to take your measures accordingly.

I hope the matter I have sent you is suitable – after the completion of the memoir I shall gather a little fresh material together.

If it would be of any convenience to you Dr Frankland of Putney college would correct the proofs of the memoir.

I have now only to express the hope that you will think it worth< y of> insertion, and to bid you g<oo>dbye for the present.

very sincerely yours | – John Tyndall

enclose a line or two: Tyndall saved postage by enclosing his letter with Hirst’s. It was posted from Halifax (postmark) with a penny stamp.

memoir on magnetism: this memoir was important to Tyndall. He had already mentioned it twice to Francis (letters 0459 and 0461) and here he tried to ensure that Francis left space for it in the March issue of Phil. Mag. It appeared in April (cited 0464, n. 2.).

my last note: letter 0461.
