From Hermann Knoblauch   11 Aug. 51

Marburg 11 Aug. 51.

My ‘dear friend’

According to my promise I give you notice of our journey to England. I shall close my lectures on the 22th of this month and than depart the other day.1

My father (who is this moment with me in Marburg) and I have not yet decided whether we shall go by way of Ostende or Calais; but after all it seems sure that we shall come over to England on the 26th or near so.

The Hotel (von) Morlay (corner of Trafalgar Square and Strand, near Charing-Cross)2 has been recommended to us. – As you were kind enough to offer to procure lodgings for us, we accept this favour, when it does not give you too much trouble. We want 2 bed-rooms (one of them for my father, not too small (bequem und geräumig3), and situated not too high in the house). Perhaps you could order them for us in the hotel above mentioned from the 26th of August.

We probably will remain there the whole time during our stay in London, but as we can not determine this before having seen the lodgings and knowing the price perhaps too expensive for a longer time pray order them only for a week or so, (if it be necessary to fix a time). (but we leave these pecuniary points to yourself.)4

The new Reostat has come to Marburg in these days, just in time before the beginning of the lecture on Electricity.

We should be very glad if you could arrange matters so as to meet us in London.

With my best wishes and kind regards of my Father and myself,

yours | most truly | Herm. Knoblauch.

A letter from you could reach me here with certainty only, when it comes until the 21th at farthest.

than depart the other day: Knoblauch’s English was idiosyncratic.

Hotel (von) Morlay: Morley’s Hotel occupied the whole eastern side of Trafalgar Square, except for the ground storey at the southern end which was occupied by the Post Office.

bequem und geräumig: comfortable and roomy.

(but we leave ... to yourself): added in the margin.

Dr John Tyndall … England: address from envelope.
