To William Francis   Sunday morng1

Queenwood Sunday morng

Dear Francis.

Bunsen’s Memoir2 has just reached me – [it] is unfortunately rather long, taking up about 75 pages of the Annalen – What’s to be done? if you don’t make use of it I will send it off to Playfair and request him to have it translated in the reports of the Chemical Society.

Sincerely yours | J Tyndall

7 September 1851: a Sunday, dated by reference to Bunsen’s memoir. In letter 0525 (Saturday [6 September]) Tyndall said that he was expecting to receive Bunsen’s memoir the following day.

Bunsen’s Memoir: ‘Ueber die Processe der vulkanischen Gesteinsbildungen Islands’, Poggend. Annal., 83:6 (1851), pp. 197–272. The length made editors reluctant to publish a translation. It was eventually published in 1853 in Scientific Memoirs (see letter 0666, n. 1).
