From William Whewell   Oct. 9 1851

Trinity Lodge Cambridge | Oct. 9 1851

Dear Sir,

I am so frequently called upon to give testimonials1 to persons who have an official claim upon me and find it so difficult to do so to my satisfaction even in such cases that [I] must seek to be excused from the task in any other cases.

At the same time I may say that from the printed papers2 which you have sent me it is apparent that you are well acquainted with the recent progress and present state of Natural Philosophy, and are occupied in promoting its further advances. If the expression of this opinion on my part is likely to be of any use to you you are at liberty to employ it

I am dear Sir | Your very faithful Servant | W. Whewell

Dr. Tyndall

called upon to give testimonials: Tyndall’s request is missing. It was sent before letter 0530, in which he was waiting for a reply from Whewell; probably early in September when he sent out other requests (letters 0518, 0519, 0522, and 0523).

the printed papers: presumably the same as those sent with other requests for testimonials (letter 0518, n. 2).
