From William Robert Grove   Oct. 12, 1851

London, | Oct. 12, 1851.

Dear Sir,

I have been absent on the Continent for some time and only received your note1 yesterday, which being enclosed in the copies of your papers was not forwarded to me. I read your first paper communicated to the British Assn 2 with much interest, and from that and from what I have heard of your remarks I have a most favorable opinion of your qualifications for a Professorship of Nat. Philosophy; but I should like to have an opportunity of reading your other papers and communicating with Mr Faraday (who is, I believe, personally acquainted with you) before I pledge myself more definitely.

Please let me know when the election takes place.3

I leave London in a day or two for Wales, and shall return in about a fortnight. If then I can be of service to you I shall be happy to do whatever I can and ought.

Faithfully yours, | W. R. Grove.

your note: letter missing.

your first paper ... Assn: Tyndall probably sent his paper, ‘On Diamagnetism and Magnecrystallic Action’, in the form that had been published in the Phil. Mag. (see letter 0498, n. 6).

when the election takes place: Tyndall sent off the testimonials in mid-October; thus it is unlikely that Grove, according to the timetable set out here, could have sent a testimonial in time. Although Tyndall kept hoping for a testimonial from Grove (see letter 0554) there is no record of him receiving one.
