This morning I received the enclosed from Dr Lardner. It is2 worth while to have a testimonial from him. could you manage to enclose a memoir or two if I send them to you in your packet of next month?3 – I don’t know the ‘usual mode of conveyance’ to which he refers.
Before I received your last note4 I had sent a copy of the bismuth paper to Faraday5 and another to Grove6 (from whom I expect a certificate daily7) these are the only two that I have sent away, and had I received your note in time even they should have been kept back.

[21 October 1851]: Tyndall had just received letter 0552, dated 18 October 1851, from Lardner from Paris. ‘Tuesday’ is therefore probably 21 rather than 28 October, that is 3 days by post rather than 10 from Paris to Queenwood. But see n. 7 below.
It is: Tyndall probably intended ‘If it is’ or ‘Is it’.
enclose … your packet of next month: Tyndall is avoiding expensive foreign postage by asking Francis to enclose his mail in a larger Taylor and Francis parcel to Paris. The allusion to ‘next month’ implies that Tyndall sent his translations for Phil. Mag. to Francis in a regular monthly posting; other letters show that additional postings were sometimes made.
your last note: letter missing. Francis had apparently advised against sending out early copies of the memoir on bismuth (which was published in the November issue of Phil. Mag.).
the bismuth paper to Faraday: cited letter 0525, n. 2; the accompanying letter is missing.
to Grove: letter missing. Tyndall possibly sent the paper on bismuth to Grove with his reply to letter 0547.
expect a certificate daily: see letter 0547. Grove had not promised the testimonial as quickly as Tyndall expected it – unless this letter dates from 28 October which is unlikely (see n. 1).
