To John Frederick William Herschel   8th November 1851

Queenwood College near Stockbridge Hants | 8th November 1851

Sir,

I beg leave to offer myself as a candidate for the Professorship of Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry in the University College Sidney.

I have the honour to submit to you the accompanying printed copies of Testimonials. They have been duly authenticated in Guild Hall before one of the Magistrates of the City of London. If the original French and German documents be required I shall be happy to produce them.

In addition to these I beg to lay before you a copy of a private letter from Professor Faraday1 in which the absence of a certificate from him is accounted for.

To the five scientific memoirs2 which accompany this I beg also to refer, respecting my qualifications as a physicist. With regard to Chemistry I have to state that I have practically pursued both qualitative and quantitative analysis in the laboratory of Professor Bunsen of Marburg (now of Breslau) and have attended his excellent lectures during two or three successive half years. My chief attention, however, has been directed to Experimental Philosophy, and I have made my chemical studies accessory and subordinate to this.

I have the honour to be | Sir, | Your most Obedient Servant | John Tyndall

Sir John F.W. Herschel Bart.3

private letter from Professor Faraday: letter 0506.

five scientific memoirs: the four papers sent with requests for testimonials (cited letter 0518, n. 2) plus the recent paper on the polarity of bismuth (letter 0525, n. 2).

Sir John . . . Bart.: in this very formal letter Tyndall placed the addressee’s name at the bottom of the first page, not at the end of the letter.
