To William Francis1

My Dear Francis.

I send you Feilitsch2 – do unto it what seemeth to thee good,3 I shall probably request you to send a few memoirs to paris for me on the 1st – Lardner4 is writing a work on Natural Philosophy5 and I think he will be able to make use of them – if you advise me against it however I will take your advice

Sincerely yours | Tyndall

StBPL T&F, Authors’ letters

[mid-late December 1851]: this letter is tentatively dated to mid-late December by the allusion to Feilitzsch, which suggests it was written only a day or two after letter 0590. The allusion to a regular posting to Paris on the 1st suggests that this is written late in the month (although does not identify a specific month).

Feilitsch: paper not identified (letter 0590, n. 5).

do unto it ... good: it seems it was not published (see letter 0590, n. 5).

memoirs to paris … Lardner: Tyndall had made a similar request previously (see letters 0554 and 0557). This letter suggests that he had been conducting further correspondence (missing) with Lardner. His uncertainty over whether it was advisable to send memoirs to Lardner reflects the latter’s reputation (letter 0557, n. 4).

Natural Philosophy: Lardner’s Hand-book of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy. Second Course (London: Taylor, Walton, and Maberly, 1852), was published in September 1852 (advertisement in Morning Chronicle, 29 September 1852). It included chapters on heat, electricity (both common and voltaic), and magnetism. After it was published, Tyndall asked Francis to send him a copy (see letter 0683).
