Sir J. Herschel presents his Compliments to Mr Tyndall and returns Prof. Faraday’s letter1 which he may require – the rest of the testimonial and works sent being printed matter Sir J. H. presumes need not be sent by post. Should Mr T. wish for them they will be delivered to any one whom Mr T. may depute to call for them

Prof. Faraday’s letter: letter 0506.
the Council: the professors for the newly-founded university in Sydney were chosen by Herschel, Airy, and ‘two others’ (letter 0568); these were Professor Maldon and H. Denison (see Wilfrid Airy, ed., Autobiography of Sir George Biddell Airy (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1896), p. 207).
Dr. Wooley: the Rev. John Woolley, foundation Professor of Classics.
Mr Pell: Morris Pell, foundation Professor of Mathematics.
Dr. J Smith: Dr. John Smith, foundation Professor of Chemistry and Experimental Physics. He was a medical doctor who had trained at Marischal College in Scotland.
Chem.: the position Tyndall applied for. In letter 0561 Tyndall described it formally as the Professorship of Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry.
