From Edward Sabine   Feb. 5t 1852

11. Old Burlington St | Feb. 5t 1852

My dear Sir –

As you desired, your certificate for the R.S. was sent (with Dr Faradays signature affixed) to Mr Sylvester, six weeks ago,1 from the RS., [day] post, addressed according to the direction in the RS.ies list furnished by himself – After waiting a long while, a second letter was written to him to the same address, to which he has replied saying he knows nothing of the former letter – Had there been a mis-direction the letter would have been returned at the P.O. to the R.S. from which the certificate was dated. I conclude therefore that the letter was duly delivered but has been mislaid.2

I must plead this as a cause for troubling you once more for a statement of your works, as I have destroyed the one you formerly sent me3 – I will then obtain Dr Faradays signature again, together with Mr Huxley’s, Mr Grove’s, & Mr Gassiot’s (the 2 last named gentleman having expressed to me their wish to sign) and will sent it to you to forward to Mr Sylvester4 – & to return to me – It must be all done in the present month5

Sincerely yours | Edward Sabine.

Dr Tyndall;6

your certificate ... six weeks ago: in letter 0585 (5 December 1851) Sabine informed Tyndall that he was about to send the certificate around to be signed.

I conclude ... mislaid: Sabine holds Sylvester responsible for the loss of the letter.

statement … sent me: the list requested in letter 0571. Tyndall sent the information to Sabine on 3 December 1851; Sabine acknowledged its receipt in letter 0585.

obtain Dr Faradays signature ... Sylvester: the certificate was signed (from personal knowledge) by Faraday, Grove, Huxley, Sylvester, and also John Phillips, in that order. Gassiot did not sign the certificate.

It must be all done in the present month: the signatures were collected by 26 February.

Dr Tyndall: we place Tyndall’s name, as addressee, at the bottom of the letter, although Sabine wrote it at the bottom of his first page.
