To William Francis   Saturday Night1

<RA>Queenwood Saturday night

<LTR>My Dear Francis.

How would you advise me to act with regard to the enclosed?2 Shall I send the document3 when I receive it from Col. Sabine to Mr Sylvester by post, or would it not be surer to send it first to you and you might oblige me by sending a boy with it to Lincoln’s Inn Fields4 – I dont know what to think of it, the obliging readiness with which Mr Sylvester consented to sign forbids the idea that he has any objection to do so. Had I known of the matter while in London5 I should have procured an introduction or two by which the difficulty might have been obviated – but I thought the matter ended.

very sincerely yours | John Tyndall

The letter reached me this morning – I should be glad if you would return it to me.

Be kind enough to send me gassiot’s address.6

<INFO>StBPL T&F, Authors’ letters

[7 February 1852]: this letter was written after Tyndall received letter 0598 (of 5 February) from Sabine; the next Saturday was 7 February.

the enclosed: letter 0598.

the document: the nomination certificate for his election to the RS.

Lincoln’s Inn Fields: Tyndall was mistaken. Sylvester, a recently qualified barrister, was a member of one of the inns of court, but of the Inner Temple, not Lincoln’s Inn.

while in London: Tyndall had been in London over Christmas (see letter 0592, esp. n. 5).

gassiot’s address: Sabine had told Tyndall (letter 0598) that Gassiot had expressed a desire to sign the certificate.
