To George Gabriel Stokes   11th July 1852

Queenwood College | nr Stockbridge | Hants 11th July 1852

Dear Sir

I cannot be otherwise than satisfied with the entire matter and tone of your letter1 which reached me this morning, and I thank you for it just as heartily as if it were the document for which I became your petitioner.2

Did I not fear that you would deem me a forward fellow I would request a favour of another kind at your hands. you know I am examining the influence of molecular structure upon the conduction of heat – Professor Thomson informs me that you have treated the subject analytically and have published your researches in the Cambridge and Dublin mathematical journal.3

If you could spare me a copy of the investigation I should feel greatly indebted to you. –

I am anxious both to inform myself as to your results and also to refer to them in my paper, and I really do not know how I am to procure them otherwise than by direct application to yourself.

I remain | dear Sir | very faithfully yours | John Tyndall

Prof. Stokes &. &.

The feeling of the necessity of a discovery is generally anterior to its accomplishment and certainly the present state of electrical science does originate such a feeling. We want a generalization which shall embrace all the modifications of electricity which you have mentioned.

the document … petitioner: Tyndall probably requested a testimonial to submit with his application for the Galway professorship, but received a letter from Stokes instead, which he could then use. This was an option often taken by more eminent men of science when asked for a testimonial (see, for example, letters 0542 from Whewell and 0506 from Faraday).
