My dear Sir

I hope you will consider the subject which I am about to mention as a sufficient excuse for this note. Dr Hoffmann and I are about to continue the publication of the English translation of Liebigs Report1 and it would be very satisfactory to us if we could obtain your services in making the translation of the Physics.

We shall be much obliged to you if you will let us know2 whether this is possible on any terms.

The work is far from flourishing but if I hear from you that you can undertake this part, in my next note some more definite arrangement may be proposed. There will probably be from 12 to 14 sheets of the translation.

let us know: Tyndall’s reply is missing but is summarised in his Journal for 16 October 1852: ‘Wrote back saying that I had many heavy claims upon my time and would gladly avoid incurring further responsibility but that nevertheless if he desired I should be reluctant to decline the translation’ (JT/2/13b/586). Bence Jones sent Tyndall the parts of the Report he was to translate on 19 October (letter 0674).
