My dear Sir

Our friend Dr Bence Jones has given us hopes that you may be prevailed on to be one of those to whose free kindness we are indebted for our Friday evenings.1

The subject which you are likely to take is an excellent one for our audience and we have the same electro-magnet with which Dr Faraday rotated a ray of light & established diamagnetism. – It is half the ‘mooring’ of an Indiaman2

Perhaps you would tell me at your convenience whether a Friday in Feby or March would suit you –

Ever truly yours | John Barlow

Friday evenings: see letter 0674, n. 5.

Indiaman: a ship engaged in trade with India, or the East or West Indies; spec. a large trading ship belonging to the East India Company (OED).

E[sq]: this semi-illegible squiggle probably stands for “Esquire”.
