From Richard Carter   7 Jany, 1853

Halifax | 7 Jany, 1853

Dear Sir,

I have been solicited by a lady,1 a friend of yours, to recommend a suitable Educational Establishment where she might place her son, a fine youth of 12 years – I at once thought of Queenwood College, having seen, a little while ago, that you had renewed your connection with it. Will you favour me with a little general information as to changes &c in order that the lady in question may be able to determine whether she will send her little charge in otherwise. I am very anxious to render her any assistance I can & you will therefore imagine how gratified I shall feel for such council, as in your judgment it w[oul]d be her intent to follow.

The father2 of the little fellow, is an officer in India and the parent of a very intelligent & I think an admirable youth.

I cannot allow this opportunity to pass with congratulating you on the successful presentation of your scientific researches, resulting as I have been gratified to observe in a Fellowship of the Royal Society3 – Such a distinction is alike honourable to your reputation; as it must be pleasing to your own mind, in the associations of noble champions of science with whom you have secured a position.

I had the pleasure too of receiving a few weeks ago the Inaugural dissertation4 of our mutual friend Hirst – It was sent to me with ‘the Authors kind regards’ but unaccompanied by any note or other testimony which would enable me to make any recognition of the pleasing Event.

If you can give me any account of his whereabouts when you write I should feel obliged

Say also if during the vacation you do not intend to pay a visit to our industrious locality

I should be very glad to see you, & in order that I may have a little more of your Society than in your later visit to Halifax, I should be further glad to offer you a welcome to such hospitality as my humble domicile affords

Wishing you very happy returns in the New Year I remain Dear Sir | Very faithfully yours | Richd Carter | John Tyndall Esq. F.R.S.
