To Thomas Archer Hirst   Monday

Monday1

My dear Tom

I start at 8 20 tomorrow morning and hope to be at the Waterloo Station2 at 11 or a little after. If you are not there to meet me I would not insure your safety across the Channel for the gods will be sure to punish you.

John

Monday: LT wrote ‘Jan 18/53’. This is a mistake as the ‘Monday’ heading to this letter was 17 January. Tyndall noted in his journal entry of 17 January: ‘wrote telling him [Tom] that I would start early in the morning’ (JT/2/13b/595).

Waterloo Station: a major train station near the south bank of the Thames. Tyndall was meeting Hirst, who had come from Germany to visit his dying friend, Francis Booth (see letters 0698 and 0703).
