From Thomas Henry Huxley1

Do for heaven’s sake alter the molecular condition of your mind so as to suspend the operation of that confounded modesty of yours and dont sell yourself too cheaply. You had better stay where you are than take a third-rate place in London, however tempting it may look. If you come to town you must be prepared to fly high or believe me you wont fly at all. […]2 It seems probable that two openings will occur for you both at the Royal Institution and at the London Institution3 and I know that the most influential people at the Museum of Economic Geology4 would get you there if it could be managed

[21] February 1853: in his 22 February journal entry Tyndall wrote: ‘Yesterday had a letter from Huxley in which he raises a warning note’ (JT/2/13b/601). Tyndall then copied out excerpts from a letter from Huxley. What is included here, therefore, is just a fragment from an original letter that is no longer extant.

[…]: After quoting three sentences from the letter in his journal, Tyndall wrote here ‘In another place he says’ and then quoted the last sentence included in the letter above (JT/2/13b/601).

two openings … at the London Institution: see letter 0721.

Museum of Economic Geology: this is in reference to the Museum of Practical Geology and the Government School of Mines and Science as applied to the Arts (often just referred to as the Government School of Mines), established in 1851 on Jermyn Street (Piccadilly), and which had developed from the Museum of Economic Geology.
