From Thomas Archer Hirst   Friday1

Mittel Stasse No 5 | Friday

Dear John,

Your few words2 arrived yesterday. I have called on Wiedemann, he has nearly finished his paper,3 in a few days he will bring it to me for perusal and after correcting I will send it.

I have called on Sauerback4 the maker of Dove’s Improved Sirene.5

The best kind with four tones and “Zähler Neck”6 costs 32 Thalers. With one tone and Zähler, 25 Thalers, with 4 tones but without Zähler 26 Thlrs. Of course you must have the one at 32. Du Bois7 says they are cheaper here than in Paris. In 3 weeks (at most) after ordering it it will be ready. I think you had better come and fetch it yourself. Clausius wishes the enclosed8 to be inserted as note in the paper of his9 I sent you a day or two ago.

Since I began writing this short note the postman brought me a letter from Roby10 stating that poor Booth died on Tuesday last.11

Let me hear from you soon.

Yours affectionately, | T. A. Hirst.

Prof. Knoblauch is in Berlin.
