From Henry Bence Jones   May 9, 1853

My dear Dr Tyndall,

The Managers met to day1 and Mr Faraday stated that he wished to mention a subject in order that at our next meeting (this day fortnight) it might be placed on the minutes. He then made a statement & proposed you as Professor of Physics to receive £200 & to give 19 lectures and in order to shew us what we might & ought to do he read a statement of what the then managers had done for Davy, & he said he saw no reason why we should not do the same now. Davy was given £100 & rooms the first year. The second year £200 The third £300 The fourth £400 The fifth an extra hundred to go on excursion. The sixth it was repeated & he was allowed to take travelling an assistant & have his expenses paid. The seventh he had a multitude of other appointments After this Mr Faraday said we might do anything.

When he finished Mr Gassiot said he thought it right to say that the London Institution were going to make an offer to you. Hereupon it was unanimously agreed that Mr Faraday should make a proposition in writing at our next meeting on the 23rd.

I have little doubt that a scale sliding upward will result and you will be allowed any sum you please however great for experiments. We agreed to pay £28 for the illustration of Hofmann’s lectures2 & ten times as much if you want it would be given for original research.

Nothing could be better than Mr Faradays statement. It was every thing that could be wished and so I hope in a fortnights time all this will be settled.

I have nothing else new. Du Bois3 tells me he has nearly finished his answer but I have already told you this.4

Believe me | Yours most truly | H. Bence Jones

Managers met today: the Managers of the RI.

Hoffman’s lectures: throughout 1853 and 1854, ‘A Course of Lectures on Organic Chemistry’ delivered by Hofmann at the RI were published in the Medical Times and Gazette, beginning with the 5 February 1853 issue (Medical Times and Gazette, 27 [1853], pp. 131–34). It is likely that they are referring to these lectures.

Du Bois: Emil du Bois-Reymond.

already told you this: see letter 0754, n. 8.
