My dear Tom.
You may make your mind easy as to my going to Paris.2 I shall undoubtedly go there. Mean time cast about for a lodging for me. Perhaps you can manage it in the Hotel Corneille.3 Possibly once in Paris I may stop there for several weeks, but dont mention this as there may be people there who would expect me to call upon them and I dont intend to make calls until towards the end of my sojourn. I shall probably remain here for the next three weeks – before the middle of July I shall certainly be at your side. How long does the session last? I should certainly like to hear some of the lectures as it is a capital mode of improving in the language. Debus started yesterday to London. Tonight at 10 o’C[lock] he starts for Hamburg4 and thence to Cassel.5 Wrightson has sent me his dissertation.6 I hope he may only get out of the discussion as cleverly as he has entered it. For some time I have been very feeble both in brain and body, but this morning and for the last day or two I feel a pulse of returning vigour so that when I come to Paris I shall be as well able to thrash you as ever I was. I may ask you to help me at the next no. of the Scientific Memoirs7 but this one I shall complete myself. You have had your own share of trouble with them for the present. The A shall be attended to.8 I trust you will have a full house next half year. Prospects were never better at Queenwood. The farm class is extinct.9 It was a pest and you may congratulate yourself that you will have nothing to do with it. I hope you will keep the house full. Indeed if it fails it will be purely for want of good management. and now I think I have satisfied you and this being done I am satisfied myself. Goodbye
Your affectionate | John

21 June 1853: Hirst wrote ‘21st June 1853’ at the top of the letter, but that was likely the date he received it. It was presumably written a few days before, possibly 19 June, which was a Sunday. LT noted as well that ‘Tyndall was still at Queenwood at the time of writing and only left there on 6 July.’
my going to Paris: Tyndall previously stated that he might not make it to Paris (see letter 0767).
Hotel Corneille: the Hôtel Corneille was a Parisian hotel located in the Latin Quarter of the city.
Hamburg: a city located on the river Elbe in northern Germany.
Cassel: Kassel, Germany, a town south of Hamburg, where Debus had studied under Robert Bunsen at the Higher Vocational School.
Wrightson … dissertation: Wrightson’s dissertation was entitled, ‘Ueber das Atomgewicht und die Constitution der Alkohole’ (Marburg: Joh. Aug. Koch, 1853).
Scientific Memoirs: see letter 0698, n. 8.
The A shall be attended to: as in Thomas ‘A.’ Hirst. Tyndall had asked Hirst to respond ‘immediately’ to a query about how his name was to appear in the prospectus for Queenwood College (see letter 0767).
The farm class is extinct: see letter 0746, n. 9.
