To Thomas Archer Hirst   23rd July

Berlin. | Universität’s Strasse No. 4. | 23rd. July

My dear Tom,

I find your friend Schneider makes some difficulty about sending a [Mechesel1] to London and I have ordered some instruments which I should like to be able to pay for when they reach me. Would you then like a good fellow send me the 1st halves of two £10 notes. Du kannst zwei Tage abwarten und dann die andere zwei Hälfte nachschicken.2 If you are in Queenwood Wright will hand you over the balance of my account. Just let me know to what extent I may draw upon you. My orders for instruments must be guided by your answer. Whatever it may be these orders will not be heavy: I shall pay you very soon after my return. Dont forget to send the £15 to the place mentioned. I shall soon be alone here. The professors are all going away. Steiner is at some bathing place. Dirichlet I have seen but not yet spoken to. I shall probably call upon him to day or tomorrow – My lodgings here are very snug, and the people exceedingly attentive – 10 thalers a month is what I pay. I saw several places but none pleased me so well as this. Let me know your prospects at Queenwood when you write – or rather your numbers. I hope you will have a full house. Remember me kindly to all. I wish all well and if Queenwood do not flourish I shall regret it. If it fail it will be a standing reproach to every body connected with it – You have a capital problem before you there boy. See that you solve it well –

ever yours affectionately | John.
