My dear John,
Yesterday I sent you the 1st halves of three £5 notes;1 today having received your second letter2 I send the remaining halves of the above, and with them I risk the safety of a whole £5 note, making in all £20 which I place to our account. I have received your balance £8. 1. 2 just now from Mr Wright, and therefore Mr. E.3 and you are straight. I have yet a £10 note at your disposal but after that no more until Octr 1st when you can have about £20 and all this without a moments inconvenience. Should you require more however for instruments I can easily provide you with it. Mr Edmondson says that as we have now more than 65 boys you may buy the diagrams of which you speak,4 and if they are such as to be of immediate service Schneider will send me them directly with other books he has for me. Mrs Graham and her son5 are expected tomorrow. I hope before she comes she will have received your letter6 about which I wrote you a week ago.
Playfair’s letter7 with a ‘clean’ stamp will be sent by this day’s post but before it reaches him I am afraid the Post office authorities will dirty the stamp.
As this letter is risky I shall be anxious until I hear of its safe arrival.
And now go and get strong, with my blessing.
T.A. Hirst.
