To Thomas Archer Hirst   Saturday1

Saturday

My dear Tom.

I should not like to leave the impression upon your mind that the medal affair2 was one of mere partisanship and the affair is too long to write about. I will wait till we meet and talk the matter over. You can hardly estimate how little the whole transaction has affected me. I kept my thoughts in clear daylight all through, and simple straightforward action has kept my mind at peace.

Yours | John
