From Juliet Pollock   Tuesday1, 2

My dear Mr. Tyndall,

If you will come and join us at our quiet dinner at 7 either Thursday or Friday next, you will see my little boy3 & we shall be very glad to have the pleasure of an evening with you. We have sent away our man servant and are <1 word missing> pretending to ourselves that we are in the country, & our dinner is an [union] of dinner and tea, which I hope would not be disagreeable to you. It is most kind of you to think of my little man. I shall be obliged to you to [send] [me] a [line] to say on which of the days named we may hope to see you.

Yours very truly | Juliet Pollock | 59 Montagu Square | Tuesday

Juliet Pollock: Juliet Pollock, née Creed (1819–99), writer and wife of William Frederick Pollock (1815–88), 2nd Baronet.

[14 March 1854]: Pollock dated her letter as ‘Tuesday’, and Tyndall noted in his journal entry of 17 March 1854 that ‘Mrs. Pollock in passing asked me kindly how I did, and said that she was sorry I could not join them last night’ (Journal, JT/2/13b/667). As such, this letter was likely written on 14 March 1854.

my little boy: the Pollocks had three sons, Frederick Pollock (1845–1937), 3rd Baronet, Walter Herries Pollock (1850–1926), and a third unknown son (ODNB). It is unclear which son is being referred to here, although ‘little man’ may refer to Walter Herries Pollock, who would have been three or four years of age at the time of writing.
