From Peter Riess   13 April 1854

Geehrtester Herr

Most honoured Sir

You would do me a great favour, if you would have the lines below inserted in a faithful translation in the Philosophical Magazine1 as soon as possible. That a physicist does not want to let his hard won and indisputable property to be snatched away from him requires no excuse with you and your fellow countrymen. Should it not seem possible to you to carry out my wish, then a few lines are requested by

Your | most humble | Dr. P. Riess | (Spandauerstrasse 81)

Concerning the Electr. Generation of Heat.2

Herr W. Thomson has stated in the Philos. Magazine (March 1854 p. 193),3 that the quantity of heat generated by the discharge of a Leyden jar4 is proportional to the square of the quantity of electricity discharged, which Herr Joule supposedly first proved in 1840, in contradiction to the experiments done earlier by Sir W. Snow Harris.5 This statement is incorrect in every regard. Herr Joule never proved the law referred to, but only expressed the Vermuthung (presumption), in a footnote to his work on the heat of Voltaic current, that, under the necessary constraints, electr. heating was proportional to the square of the charge of a given battery (Phil. Magaz. October 1841 p. 265).6 At the time when this vague presumption was expressed, a paper had already been in existence for four years, in which I had refuted Harris’s statement and proved the law of squares7 by experiments (Poggend. Annal. March 1837 p. 341)8 I had already given the complete formula for heating by battery discharge in two extended papers, after I had discovered the remarkable relation[ship] of the quantity of heat generated in a filament to the resistance of the filament (Poggend. Annalen January 1838 p.47. September 1838 p.1)9

Such complaints, which cannot be more embarrassing to the man who prompts them than they are to the man who is forced to make them, would be avoided, if everywhere the proper demand were acknowledged that an assertion of so general a nature as Herr Thomson has ventured, may be only the result of a careful examination of works published on the subject, not only in one’s own country but also in other countries.
