Hochgeehrter Herr Professor

Esteemed Herr Professor
My reply to your letter of 3 July1 has been somewhat delayed by a short trip that I was forced to make. I have posted the order sent to me2 for an apparatus for the detection of diamagnetic polarity3 to Herr Leyser4 in Leipzig and have precisely specified the modifications to the instrument that seemed essential for your purposes,5 and hope that he can accordingly supply an instrument that completely meets your wishes.
The instrument, as described in my paper,6 was not meant to be used for fine and precise observations such as you wish to do, and you correctly remark yourself in your letter7 that a greater effect can be obtained if two astatically connected needles8 are used instead of one simple needle, whereby some other modifications of the instrument then needed to be connected, which I have precisely specified to Herr Leyser.
The cost of the instrument will therefore be considerably increased because of this and I have requested Herr Leyser to give you a more detailed report about this at once.
Always with the greatest respect always | Your most humble | Wilhelm Weber

the order sent to me: not identified (but see letter 0959).
diamagnetic polarity: the polarity of diamagnetism was discussed in letters 0710 and 0821, n. 4. Tyndall later elaborated on his opinion of Weber’s views on diamagnetic polarity in letter 0970. The specific apparatus referred to here is not identified.
Herr Leyser: Georg Moritz Leyser (1816–81), a German instrument maker attached to the University of Leipzig, whose electrodynamometer had been on display at the Great Exhibition of 1851 (‘Saxony’, Official Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, Part IV [London: W. Clowes & Sons, 1851], pp. 1104–13, on p. 1105). See also letter 0959.
precisely specified the modifications … your purposes: Leyser described the apparatus in letter 0959.
my paper: not identified. Weber published a number of papers on diagmagnetism (see letter 0820, n. 13).

astatically connected needles: ‘one[s] so situated or arranged as to be unaffected by the earth’s magnetism’ (OED).
